Every town has its own personality, favorite local restaurants, scenic beaches, walking trails, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
So rather than trying to squeeze every stop into a single itinerary, think of this as your North Shore summer bucket list. Pick a few places that catch your eye, build your own perfect day, and save the rest for another weekend. Trust us, you’ll want an excuse to come back.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy a North Shore summer day.
Start the Morning at Salisbury Beach
There’s something about an early morning at Salisbury Beach that feels completely different from the afternoon crowds.
Grab a coffee from Groundswell Surf Café, watch the surfers catch a few waves, and enjoy a quiet walk along the shoreline before the day gets busy. If you’re looking for a more active start, Groundswell also hosts beach yoga and fitness classes throughout the summer.
See the North Shore from the Water
If you’ve never seen whales off the Massachusetts coast, summer is the perfect time.
From downtown Newburyport, the Captain’s Lady III heads offshore for whale-watching excursions into the waters surrounding the
Isles of Shoals. Depending on the day, you may spot humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, seals, and countless seabirds.
Not interested in a four-hour whale watch? The same company also offers sunset cruises, fishing trips, and seasonal birdwatching excursions, making it easy to experience the North Shore from an entirely different perspective.
Spend an Afternoon at Cider Hill Farm
No North Shore summer feels complete without at least one trip to Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury.
During the summer months, visitors can pick raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, and even flowers as different crops come into season. Throughout the season, the farm also hosts festivals featuring hayrides, live music, food trucks, hard cider, and plenty of family-friendly activities.
One tip we always give people: check the farm’s picking calendar before you go. Availability changes throughout the season depending on what’s ripe that week.
Hike to the Highest Point in Essex County
If you’re craving a little adventure, head to Ward Reservation in Andover.
With nearly 15 miles of trails, there’s something for every experience level. The highlight for many visitors is Holt Hill, the highest point in Essex County, where you’ll find sweeping views across the Merrimack Valley, and on a clear day, even Boston’s skyline.
Don’t miss Pine Hole Pond while you’re there. The short boardwalk crosses a rare floating bog that’s home to unique native plants you won’t find in many other places throughout Massachusetts.
Explore Downtown Salem Beyond October
Salem deserves far more attention than just Halloween.
On Thursday afternoons during the summer, Derby Square fills with local farmers, bakers, artisans, and food vendors for the Salem Farmers’ Market. It’s one of our favorite ways to experience the city at a slower pace.
After browsing the market, spend some time exploring Salem’s locally owned shops, waterfront, and restaurants. Summer offers a completely different side of Salem than the crowds many people associate with October.
Slow Down at Long Hill
Long Hill in Beverly offers beautifully maintained gardens, shaded walking paths, woodland trails, and peaceful places to simply sit and enjoy the surroundings.
Originally the summer home of the Sedgwick family, the property now welcomes visitors to explore more than 100 acres of gardens, forests, and historic landscapes. It’s especially beautiful during the summer when the gardens are in full bloom.

Enjoy a Classic North Shore Fried Clam Lunch
You can’t spend a summer day on the North Shore without stopping for fried clams.
While everyone has their favorite spot, Woodman’s of Essex has earned its place as a local institution. Often credited as the birthplace of the fried clam, Woodman’s has been serving generations of locals and visitors who come for overflowing plates of whole belly clams, lobster rolls, chowder, and other New England seafood favorites.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch before heading farther down the coast or lingering outside on a summer afternoon, it’s one of those places that feels like a rite of passage on the North Shore.
Spend the Afternoon Exploring Gloucester
Continue east into Gloucester, America’s oldest seaport and one of the North Shore’s most iconic coastal communities.
If you’re visiting for the first time, start with a walk along Harbor Loop, where you’ll find local shops, galleries, restaurants, and working fishing boats still bringing in the day’s catch. It’s the kind of place where you can wander without much of a plan and still stumble upon something interesting.
If you’re looking for a beach afternoon, Good Harbor Beach and Wingaersheek Beach are both local favorites during the summer. Or, if you prefer a quieter pace, stop by Stage Fort Park for waterfront walking paths, picnic areas, and sweeping views of Gloucester Harbor.
End the Day at Castle Hill
Few places feel more “North Shore summer” than an evening at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate.
Each summer, the Castle Hill Picnic Concert Series transforms the lawn into one of the area’s most memorable outdoor music venues. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, or grab dinner from one of the onsite vendors before settling in for live music overlooking one of New England’s most iconic landscapes.
If you’ve never watched the sun begin to set across the Grand Allée while music drifts across the lawn, it’s an experience that’s hard to beat.
Summer Looks Different Here
The best part about summer on the North Shore is that there’s always another place to explore.
Maybe this weekend is coffee by the beach and an afternoon on the water. Next weekend could be berry picking, a hike through the woods, or discovering a town you’ve driven through dozens of times but never really stopped to experience.
